Unexpected

Just when you think you have seen or done it all something will always happen to make a believer out of you that “you ain’t seen nothing yet”.

Spend Wednesday night at a KOA campground in Petersburg, VA. This morning, Thursday, got up and headed out the door to check my email at the office. One of the overnight campers called out to me and said “man down”. He and I approached a camper with an elderly lady trying to make a phone call to 911. Her husband had gone outside and sat down on the picnic table. He had fallen over on his back on the bench with his feet on the ground. He had aspirated badly. When we got to the man we started CPR and then I took the phone from the wife’s hand, as she was almost in shock, and talked to the 911 operator. Went back to helping with CPR but it was very obvious that the man was dead. Eyes were open, no sign of pulse, totally gone. I whispered to the guy to keep up the CPR for the wife’s sake. I then went to the main entrance of the campground to direct EMT’s to the correct location. Seemed like forever, but after the EMT’s got there I looked at my watch and only 7/8 minutes had passed. Seemed like forever.

The police arrived and the wife left with them. Very sad as she was frail and I could not vision her getting the fifth wheel trailer ready to go and drive on. Luckily they were from Maryland so maybe family is not far away.

We then left after it was all over with a lot of reflective thoughts. Death can some very suddenly. I guess we had all better be ready or at least as ready as one can be.

Guess I will just wait and see what happens next.
